Amateur Radio
I have been a licensed amateur radio operator since 2006. My primary passion is chasing DX on the bands. This means making contacts
with stations outside the US. My secondary passion is working public service events in my local Pittsburgh, PA area. We work with
the coordinators who run the Pittsburgh Great Race, Race for the Cure, St. Patrick's Day Parade and the Pittsburgh Marathon. Where
we truly shine in the public eye is in times of need, when traditional communication channels become overwhelmed or destroyed
by a natural disaster. Amateur radio operators are able to step in rather quickly and provide the means to contact the outside world
when these unfortunate events occur. We can deploy in the field with our equipment, using a piece of wire for an antenna. Our equipment
can be powered via a generator, 12 volt battery or solar cell. We are "infrastructure indepdent" and each station runs independent
of another, thus allowing reliable communication services. That is why we are called upon time and time again in times of
need to provide this valuable community service.
